2016 is just about over, and for many, I am sure this is something worth celebrating.
Personally, 2016 was pretty spectacular. Moving to a new exciting country, followed by a new job and some great reads. Here are some of the best books I read this year.
Top Fiction:
1 – The Vegetarian – Winner of the Man Booker International Prize for 2016 this poignant novel remained with me for weeks after I read it. Poetic, raw and moving, this novel is worth the praise.
2 – The Remains of the Day – Having read this book later in the year, I do not yet have a review for this novel, however, I can say that I finally understand the praise given to Ishiguro and his writing. This novel is simple story with some massive depth.
3 – The Snow Child – I will admit, I never would have picked up this novel on my own but I needed something to read on the plane. Well, it was a stellar recommendation. This book is a proper love story without the cheese.
4 – The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle – While not my favourite read by Murakami, there were some intense scenes in this novel that will stay with me forever.
5 – The Sound of Waves – Sometimes the best stories are the most simple. After reading such epic and diverse novels it is nice to come back to something with a sound, true and basic concept.
Top Non-Fiction:
1 – Eat and Run – I may not have been converted to a vegan, but Jurek has given me something to think about in terms of my own running. The book is also full of some very moving and inspiring moments.
2 – A Moth to the Flame – This book was personal for me which is one reason why it is on this list, it is also a great read to get an understanding of BPD.
3 – What I Talk About When I Talk About Running – Look, another book by Murakami. Can you tell I like him? This book is part autobiographical while Murakami reflects on his life as a writer and a runner.
4 – The Heart of the Buddha’s Teaching – This novel surprised me. It is knowledgeable and inspiring and a great read for anyone wanting to know more about the Buddhist beliefs.
5 – The China Tea Book – Tea and history nerds need to read this. It has beautiful images and provides an in-depth look into the history and culture of tea as well as what makes different types of teas and how to drink them.
Have a great New Year everyone. See you in 2017!
